Chitosan is a natural product derived from chitin, which is a polysaccharide found in the exoskeleton of shellfish or crustaceans such as crabs, shrimps, prawns, lobsters, squid, and clams.
Chitin is the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature (after cellulose). Chitin mainly consists of the aminosugar N-acetylglucosamine, which is partially deacetylated. The mostly deacetylated form of chitin is called chitosan. It is a renewable resource and is isolated from crab and shrimp shell. It is used for waste water clearing, for cosmetics, for medical and verterinary and for agriculture applications.
